And it shall come to pass that just as you were a curse among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you, and you shall be a blessing. Do not fear; let your hands be strong.
Zechariah 8:13 (NKJV)
The Jews who had come back to Jerusalem from Babylonian exile had a very difficult job. The Babylonians had destroyed Jerusalem and burnt the temple, and now the returned exiles had to rebuild their lives and worship God again in their land. The work did not happen overnight. They faced serious challenges and could easily have given up. God, however, spoke through Zechariah and gave hope to His people. Their painful past would not have the final word. Then He gave them a clear instruction: “Do not fear; let your hands be strong.”
Let Your Hands Be Strong
The message in today’s key text came as the people were rebuilding the temple. Zechariah told them to listen to God’s prophets and to be of good courage. If they yielded to fear and discouragement, they could not rebuild the temple. God had brought them back from exile, and now he was calling them to go forward with the work before them. Their past had left painful memories, but they could not spend the rest of their lives looking backward. They had stones to lay, work to finish, and a place of worship to restore.
While the promises were meant for the Jews at that time, we can learn from what happened to them. Discouragement can cause us to abandon responsibilities we should continue carrying out. A difficult season can make us put aside something important. Failure can make us reluctant to try again. Fear can keep us from doing something we already know is right.
When You Feel Like Quitting
Discouragement might have made you leave something unfinished. You probably stopped working toward an important goal because progress came slowly. Perhaps you avoided a responsibility because the task became difficult. Or maybe failure made you decide that trying again was not worth it. Instead of stepping away when things become hard, ask yourself: Have I stopped because the choice is truly the right decision, or have I simply become discouraged?
“Let your hands be strong.” Do not wait until you feel completely confident before you continue. If you know you should return to a responsibility, please do so. If you stopped because you were discouraged by failure, take another step. When the task feels overwhelming, start with what you can accomplish today. You cannot change yesterday, and you do not need to finish everything at once, but you can refuse to let discouragement make you abandon important work unfinished. Keep doing what you know is right.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to quit doing what I should keep doing because of discouragement. Help me to step up to the responsibility that I’ve been avoiding and take the next step rather than give up.
