“Though you ascend as high as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,” says the LORD.
Obadiah 1:4 (NKJV)
The nation of Edom had occupied good positions in the mountains. Its cities were built among steep rocks and were difficult for enemies to reach. The people saw those heights and felt safe, but that confidence became pride with time. They began to think they were beyond anyone’s reach. Then God spoke through Prophet Obadiah. He told them that if they climbed as high as an eagle, He could still bring them down. Their position could not hide them from God.
Can Success Make You Forget God?
When life is going well, we tend to feel secure. You have a steady job, your business is doing well, you have paid the bills, and you have some money left over. You start thinking, “At least things are all right now.” We all enjoy those seasons. We should thank God for them. They give us space to relax and enjoy life. Even then, it helps to remember the One who has been with us through every season.
Maybe you have worked hard for your job or spent years building a business. Maybe you finally bought a home, finished your education, or managed to put some savings aside. Perhaps people now respect you because of what you do. Those are good things. Be thankful for them but keep God close as you enjoy them. Talk to Him about your decisions, your plans, and the things you are building. Let Him have a place in all of it.
The Danger of Feeling Too Secure
Edom had become so confident in its position that its people forgot God. That can happen to us too, sometimes without us noticing. Things start going well, and we become less prayerful. We receive a promotion and feel proud of ourselves. The business makes a decent profit, and we begin to think we have everything figured out. When people praise us, we enjoy hearing it. Take the encouragement, thank God, and keep your feet on the ground.
So, enjoy the good things that come your way. Work hard. Build your business. Take care of your family. Save some money when you can. Be happy about the progress you make but keep talking to God through it all. Tell Him what you are planning and what you are hoping for. Thank Him when things go well. When you remember that He has been with you all along, you will find that success keeps your heart thankful.
Prayer
Almighty God, thank You for the good things that You have given me and for helping me come this far. Help me enjoy them without forgetting You. Stay near me while I work and grow and plan for the future.
