Daily Devotional – Thursday. September 10, 2026
And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.
Ruth 3:11 (NKJV)
Ruth had come to Bethlehem with Naomi, her mother-in-law, after both women had been widowed. She was a foreigner in a new town, yet people had begun to notice the way she lived. Ruth worked in the fields to provide food for herself and Naomi, stayed close to her mother-in-law, and carried herself with dignity. By the time she stood before Boaz at the threshing floor, people in Bethlehem already knew something about the kind of woman she was.
The Power of a Good Reputation
Naomi had directed Ruth to Boaz because he was a close relative of her late husband’s family and could act as a family redeemer. Ruth followed Naomi’s instructions and asked Boaz to take that responsibility. Boaz promised to pursue the matter while explaining that another relative had a closer claim. This was a serious family matter, and Boaz’s words about Ruth showed what the people around her already knew. Her request had come from a woman whose character was already known.
When Boaz called Ruth a virtuous woman, he was not simply complimenting her because of what had happened that night. He was describing a woman whose character had become known in Bethlehem. The Hebrew expression carries ideas of strength, worth, capability, and excellence. Ruth’s loyalty to Naomi and her conduct among the people had made those qualities visible. Boaz could speak confidently about her because he had seen the kind of life she was living.
A Reputation That Speaks
That kind of reputation still matters. A manager deciding whom to trust with an important assignment will remember who has kept commitments before. A friend facing a difficult situation may turn to the person who has handled private matters carefully. In a family, one relative may become the person others call when something needs to be done because experience has taught them that this person can be counted on. People learn who we are by watching what we repeatedly do.
That makes me look at my life a little differently. What do my family members see when I make a promise? Can people trust me with something they have told me privately? Do I handle responsibilities well when nobody is checking? Ruth’s reputation grew from the way she lived. People saw it in how she treated Naomi, how she worked, and how she carried herself around Bethlehem. I cannot decide what everyone thinks of me, but I can decide how I will live today.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I want the people who know me best to see something honourable in how I live. Help me to keep my word and to do the right thing when no one is around.
