Daily Devotional – Thursday, September 24, 2026
Then He said to them, “Therefore, every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”
Matthew 13:52 (NKJV)
Christ had narrated several parables to His disciples to help them understand the kingdom of God. Among them were the parables of the sower, weeds growing among wheat, a hidden treasure, a pearl, and a fishing net. When He finished, He asked them if they understood what He had been saying, which they affirmed. He then likened them to scribes who had been taught about God’s kingdom and who could bring out what they had learned when others needed it.
When Knowledge Becomes Useful
The imagery Jesus used was familiar to His listeners. A householder kept valuable supplies in his store and brought them out when his household needed them. Jesus said someone who taught about God’s kingdom would do something similar. He would have what he had already learned from God’s revealed truth, along with the new things Jesus was teaching about the kingdom. He would bring these things out because he had learnt them and could now share them with others.
The Lord had just asked His disciples whether they understood His teaching. Their answer mattered because understanding was going to shape what they did next. He was preparing them to teach others what they were learning from Him. The householder in the statement had something stored up and knew how to bring it out. What we learn from God becomes especially valuable when we can bring it into a conversation, a decision, or a moment when someone needs help.
What Are You Bringing Out?
Think about something Scripture taught you that became important when life got difficult. Maybe a verse came back to you when you were afraid. Maybe something Jesus said helped you forgive someone. Occasionally a truth you have heard many times suddenly becomes personal when you find yourself living through the very situation it speaks to. Something you once heard becomes something you can draw from and share with someone else.
Keep learning God’s Word and pay attention to the lessons. He offers through life. Some truths will become clearer as you grow, while others will come back to you when a new situation gives them fresh meaning. Store those lessons in your heart. Then, when someone needs encouragement, wisdom, or hope, you may have something worth bringing out. What God teaches you can become a gift you pass on to someone who needs it.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, keep teaching me and help me to remember the lessons. When someone needs what I have learned from You, remind me to share it.
