When You Cannot See the Whole Road

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, September 30, 2026
You will show me the path of life. In Your presence is fullness of joy. At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11 (NKJV)

Have you ever had to make an important decision without knowing how things would turn out? You pray, think it through, ask someone you trust, and still feel unsure. You wish God would simply point at one option and say, “This is the way.” Most of us have faced moments like that. The difficult part is that God does not always show us the whole road. Sometimes He simply asks us to trust Him enough to take the next step.

How to Follow God’s Direction One Step at a Time

David says, “You will show me the path of life.” That is a comforting statement because it reminds us that we are not expected to figure everything out on our own. David does not say God will explain everything that will happen. He speaks about a path, which implies a gradual walk. You see what is ahead as you move forward. God may not tell you what next year will look like, but He can faithfully lead you every day.

Then David says something even more beautiful: “In Your presence is fullness of joy.” We often ask God to bless the destination we have chosen. We want the right job, the successful business, the meaningful relationship, or the opportunity we have been praying about. Those things matter, but they cannot give us the deep joy that comes from knowing God. Circumstances change. Plans change. What remains steady is God. There is a particular peace in knowing that He is with you.

When You Cannot See the Whole Road
Perhaps you are facing a decision right now and wishing you had a clearer answer. Take time to pray, seek wise counsel, and consider what God’s Word teaches. Then be willing to follow Him even if the next step does not look as impressive as you expected. Sometimes the road God chooses for us looks ordinary at first. Sometimes He changes our plans completely. What matters is not having every detail settled. What matters is remaining close to Him.

David ends by looking beyond this present life: “At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” The Christian hope is greater than simply enduring today’s uncertainty. God is leading us toward something eternal. The New Testament points these words to the resurrection of Jesus, giving us the assurance that death is not the end. Thus, if you cannot see the whole road today, do not let that frighten you. Ask God to show you the next step, then trust Him enough to take it.

Prayer
Almighty God, when I cannot see the whole road ahead, remind me to lean on You and to trust You fully.
