When Everyone Turns Against You

Daily Devotional – Friday, October 2, 2026
But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
1 Samuel 30:6 (NKJV)

David returned to Ziklag expecting that his kin and belongings would be safe and secure. Instead, the scene that confronted him was that of a burnt-down city and missing people, because the enemy had taken them captive. His soldiers were so devastated that they considered stoning him. He was carrying his own pain while facing the anger of those around him. In that moment of sorrow and helplessness, scripture records that “David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”

Where Will You Seek Your Strength?

Some seasons leave you completely drained. You may spend weeks dealing with family concerns, financial pressure, work demands, or difficult decisions. Then another problem arrives, and you wonder where you will find the strength to handle it. David was familiar with that feeling. His circumstances had left him emotionally exhausted. He needed strength for what he had to face next, and he knew where to find it.

The future king of Israel leaned on God when the pressure around him threatened to drown him. In his walk with God, he had experience of provision, guidance, protection and deliverance. Remembering the goodness of God in the past gave David the courage to face the present challenges. He could draw strength from God while everything around him seemed to be falling apart. His response shows us where to turn when we face seemingly insurmountable challenges.

When Everyone Turns Against You

Think about your phone when its battery is almost empty. You start looking for somewhere to recharge, knowing it cannot keep working indefinitely. Your inner strength needs renewal too. People can keep working, worrying, planning, and solving problems while their hearts are running empty. Eventually, even ordinary responsibilities feel heavy. Spending time with God in prayer, Bible study, worship and quiet reflection gives us space to reconnect with God and receive strength when life’s pressures have drained us.

What is draining your strength today? Bring it to God. Tell Him where you feel tired, discouraged, confused, or afraid. Then enumerate three ways through which He has been faithful to you. Spend time in Scripture and let His promises speak to your situation. You may still have difficult decisions and responsibilities ahead, but like David, strengthen yourself in the LORD your God, and trust Him for strength for your next step.

Prayer
Almighty God, when life’s challenges and pressures threaten to overwhelm and drown me, when everyone turns against me, remind me to tap into the strength that You are always willing to impart.
