You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
Psalm 23:5 (NKJV)
Mary opened her small shop on a difficult morning. Two nearby traders had been telling customers that her business would soon fail. She felt discouraged, yet customers still came. One brought a large order, another paid an old debt, and another recommended her to a new customer. Nothing had changed about the competition outside. Still, provision came through the door. She discerned that opposition did not have to disappear before she could experience God’s care.
Your Enemies Are Still There
David depicts a similar scenario in today’s key text. H envisions God preparing a table for him in the presence of his adversaries. Notice what happens. The enemies remain, yet the table is ready. God does not first remove every threat and then provide for David. He provides while the opposition watches. God further anoints David’s head with oil. The psalmist sees himself as someone who receives generous care, refreshment, honour, and provision from God.
While God will not always give us visible success while our enemies watch, He assures us of something even better. Things around us may not be going well, yet He can still take care of you. In our difficult moments, He provides for us and reminds us that what others think of us does not determine our worth. Like David, our cup can run over as our enemies watch. They cannot stop God from taking care of him.
The Table Is Bigger Than the Trouble
You may still have critics, competitors, disappointments, financial pressure, or unresolved problems while God continues to provide. Do not assume that trouble means God has abandoned you. Look for the table. He has prepared rather than staring only at the people standing around it. Give attention to the opportunities, relationships, strength, wisdom, and daily provision. He places before you. God’s care can remain visible even when your circumstances remain uncomfortable.
Perhaps you are waiting for a difficult situation to end before you believe that God is helping you. Look again. What has He already placed before you? Who has He brought alongside you? What strength has He given you for today? Receive today’s provision with gratitude instead of postponing joy until every problem disappears. Your enemies may still be present, yet the Shepherd has not stopped caring for you.
Prayer
My Good Shepherd, when troubles assail me and my enemies rejoice over my misfortune, let me never forget that You care for me and will provide what I need. Teach me to focus on Your power and goodness and not the threats of my foes.
