For thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” But you would not.
Isaiah 30:15 (NKJV)
Judah made Egypt its refuge when Assyria threatened the former. Egypt had a strong army with numerous horses and chariots. However, God was not impressed by Judah’s decision. That’s why he sent prophet Isaiah to warn the Jews to stop relying on Egypt. Rather, God’s people were to return to Him because only He could give them true security. Unfortunately, the Jewish leaders would hear none of it and chose to lean on Egypt.
Are You Trying to Fix Everything Yourself?
The Lord desired that Judah would listen to His voice and stop relying on human power.
In returning to Him, they would find rest, which referred to the settled trust they needed while facing the Assyrian threat. This situation was ironical for a nation that was founded by God Himself and had witnessed His unassailable power in the past.
Then God said, “In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” He wanted Judah to rely on Him as the threat grew. Yet the words “But you would not” show that the people refused to listen. The Jews wanted to escape the threat posed by the Assyrians, but they decided to reject the help of the Almighty God. Their obstinacy was the reason for God’s warning through Isaiah.
When Your Plans Leave God Out
When a problem demands our attention and the answer seems far away, we can easily make the same mistake. We make plans, ask for help, and work hard to change our circumstances and forget to consult God. Under pressure, fear can make us impatient with God’s timing or unwilling to follow His guidance. God calls us to examine where we have placed our confidence. Our best interest lies in seeking God’s direction, trusting Him with what we cannot control, and then taking responsible action.
Today, you may be carrying a burden that keeps your mind busy from morning until night. Take time to pray and ask God to show you the right steps to take. Make the calls you need to make, do the work in front of you, and seek wise advice. As you move forward, ask yourself whether fear is your main motivator. God calls you to trust Him and draw strength from Him, even when you have no idea how things will turn out.
Prayer
Almighty God, when fear is making me rush ahead without seeking Your direction, stop me. Teach me to do what I can and leave what I cannot control in Your hands.
