When Life Makes You Hang Your Head

Daily Devotional – Friday, October 16, 2026
But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head.
Psalm 3:3 (NKJV)

David had fled from Jerusalem. Absalom, his son, had rebelled and now sought to harm his father. The king must have felt defeated as he fled. This was a grave matter because it involved family betrayal, personal embarrassment, and the possibility of losing the throne. Everything David had worked for appeared to be falling apart before his eyes.

Can You Rise After a Painful Fall?

Yet he still looked to God, calling Him “the One who lifts up my head.” ” Those words are powerful when we examine them in light of what David was facing. He had lost his place in the palace and could no longer count on the loyalty of his son. He had every reason to feel ashamed and defeated, yet he still believed God had not abandoned him.

There is something deeply personal about the words “lifts up my head.” When we feel ashamed or defeated, even facing people can become difficult. We keep going over what happened and wondering what people think of us. Today’s key text is a reminder that we are not supposed to be defined by our failures and pains. God can help us recover and keep going.

When Life Makes You Hang Your Head

David was still in trouble when he wrote these words. His son had not suddenly changed his mind, and the king had not returned to Jerusalem. He was trusting God in the middle of the crisis. It is natural to expect negative circumstances to change before we can feel at peace again. This verse, though, alludes to the fact that we can turn to God before our troubles are over.

Perhaps you are dealing with a situation that has left you feeling despondent and frustrated. You might be regretting a decision, feeling let down by someone, or struggling with others’ opinions of you. Speak to God. Face what you need to face, make things right where you can, and do not give up on yourself. Your current circumstances do not define your future. Let God give you the strength to stand again.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I feel ashamed or defeated, help me look to You. Strengthen me to face my challenges and not give up.
