Do not My words do good to him who walks uprightly?
Micah 2:7 (NKJV)
In the kingdom of Judah, the wealthy and powerful had begun to treat other people’s property as their own. Land changed hands through greed, and families became destitute. The prophet Micah spoke bluntly about this vice. His message targeted those who profited from the injustice, but they refused to listen. The guilty were not willing to acknowledge their evil and turn from it.
When God’s Words Challenge Us
These arrogant people were pushing back against the prophet’s message and questioning whether the Lord would really act against them. They seemed to think that being God’s people should protect them from judgement. However, their lives conveyed a different narrative. They claimed a relationship with God but treated their neighbours unjustly, preferring not to be challenged about it.
Micah asks, “Do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly?” God’s words are beneficial for those who choose to live rightly. That does not mean life will always go smoothly for them. Micah’s point is that God’s goodness should not be used as an excuse to ignore wrongdoing. His words guide people in the right direction, and His warnings matter when they have gone astray.
The Message They Didn’t Want to Hear
We know how easy it is to turn to the Bible for comfort and skip over the parts that call us to change. We may welcome a promise, yet resist a reminder to speak honestly, forgive, or treat someone fairly. Still, God’s Word is not against us when it corrects us. Occasionally it shows us what we have been unwilling to see, giving us a chance to put things right.
When a Bible passage bothers you, do not rush past it. Stay with it and ask what it may be showing you about your choices. Perhaps you need to apologise, leave a habit behind, or make things right with someone. Be willing to listen to and obey God’s voice. His Word is not only there to comfort you; it also helps you see where you need to change in your life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, when Your Word shows me something I would rather avoid, help me face it instead of making excuses. Give me a sincere heart and the courage to make things right.
