The Gardener Who Hasn’t Given Up Yet

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, October 28, 2026
But he answered and said to him, “Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilise it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.”
Luke 13:8–9 (NKJV)

For three years, the fig tree stood in the vineyard. The farm owner ensured the tree had everything it needed to bear fruit, but none was forthcoming. The man was frustrated. Why should the tree continue occupying space and consuming resources without any fruit to show? He decided to cut down the tree, but his gardener restrained him and pleaded for some grace period.

One More Year of Grace

This request is the turning point of this narrative. Not the type to give excuses, he simply pleads for time to dig around the fig tree, add manure to it, and hopefully cure its barrenness. This Lord narrated this parable after warning his audience to repent or perish. This message is relevant to us in these end times.

Like the fig tree, all human beings are recipients of God’s grace, privileges and opportunities, but many fail to produce the fruits of repentance. Fortunately, Jesus, the gardener, provides us with opportunities to change our ways. He is patient enough to give us time to change our ways, but we should not assume His grace will always be there.

The Gardener Who Hasn’t Given Up Yet

There is danger in getting comfortable and complacent instead of turning to God in repentance. It is possible to listen to the gospel, receive counsel, and experience God’s kindness but continue procrastinating. During this symbolic one-year period, we should focus on examining ourselves and inviting the Holy Spirit into our hearts to bear the fruits of righteousness.

Have you been asking God for more time, yet you continue living in ways that bring shame to Him? Let this parable be a reminder that while God is merciful and tolerant, He has his limits of patience. Open your heart and life to God and allow Him to mould you into the person He intends you to be. The extended time presents a chance to produce positive outcomes.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being patient with me and giving me the opportunity to change. Without You, I cannot bear fruit. Come and live in me every day.
