The Person You Overlook

Daily Devotional – Thursday, October 29, 2026
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvellous are Your works,
and that my soul knows very well.

Psalms 139:14 (NKJV)

Occasionally, the person you struggle most to appreciate is yourself. Self-Comparison: You may compare yourself to friends, coworkers, or even younger adults and wonder why they’re making progress while you feel stuck. Their achievements make you question your abilities, your appearance or even your worth. Gradually, you become so occupied with what others have that you overlook the person God created you to be.

What Makes You Valuable?

Today’s key text offers a different way of looking at ourselves. It occurs to David that his life is the work of God. He responds with praise, recognising something about himself that is easy to overlook when one becomes too focused on their weaknesses, disappointments, and what others have achieved.

When David declares that he is fearfully and wonderfully made, he is acknowledging the extraordinary care God took in creating him. His existence attests to God’s wisdom and power. That is why he responds by praising God. He appreciates that his worth springs from him being God’s creation.

The Person You Overlook

When we begin to see ourselves through God’s eyes, we stop allowing other people’s opinions to control how we see and value ourselves. We become less troubled by someone else’s success and more grateful for the abilities and opportunities God has given us. We also learn to treat ourselves with respect, acknowledge our strengths and work on our weaknesses. In other words, this paradigm transforms how we relate to ourselves and to others.

Perhaps you have looked at someone else’s life and wished you had their confidence, success or opportunities. In the process, you may become overly critical of yourself and overlook the positive qualities you possess. Take time to appreciate what God has placed in you. You have gifts worth developing and weaknesses you can work on. Your journey is your own, and your life is valuable.

Prayer
Lord, help me appreciate who I am. Teach me to see myself through Your eyes.
