When Doing Right Doesn’t Pay Immediately

Daily Devotional – Saturday, October 31, 2026
For You, LORD, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands.
Psalm 92:4 (NKJV)

When Amani was searching for his first job after graduating from college, he prayed a lot, served God, and tried to live faithfully. In contrast, one of his classmates got a job almost immediately after offering a bribe. Such situations are familiar to many Christians. We wonder why we should remain faithful when we are suffering and why God takes so long to answer our prayers. If we are not careful, we may end up measuring God’s goodness by immediate results.

There Is More to Rejoice About

Today’s key text invites us to have a wider view of the works of God and discover more reasons to rejoice each day. Psalm 92 is a song of praise written for the Sabbath day. The psalmist speaks of declaring God’s lovingkindness in the morning and His faithfulness every night. A day is filled with both good and bad moments, yet God remains faithful throughout. Not even a negative day changes who God is or takes away from His wonderful works.

The psalmist finds joy in the works of God and His unchanging character. The following verses describe God’s great works, His wisdom, His judgement against the wicked, and His care for the righteous. God is righteous in His judgements and mighty in power. The righteous may still experience pain and disappointment, and material success is not always guaranteed. However, the wicked will not prevail forever, and God remains faithful to His people.

When Doing Right Doesn’t Pay Immediately

How often do we find ourselves celebrating God only when life is favourable? This psalm reminds us that we can still praise God for His faithfulness, believe that He is just even when the wicked prosper, and continue serving Him despite our slow progress in life. We do not have to wait until everything works out in our favour to find reasons to rejoice. There is more to celebrate about God than what we receive from Him.

Are you waiting for God to answer you, experiencing injustice or wondering whether He notices your faithfulness? Is the seeming success of the ungodly persuading you to abandon the straight and narrow path of righteousness? Take a moment to remember the works of the Lord, His goodness in creation and His dealings with His people throughout history. You will find enough reasons to keep trusting Him and serving Him joyfully despite temporary disappointments.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me recognise Your wonderful works and always rejoice in Your faithfulness. When life’s challenges threaten to overwhelm me, help me remain faithful and confident in Your righteous ways.
