Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.
Genesis 19:17 (NKJV)
Sodom had an infamous reputation for grave wickedness, and the time for its destruction had come. In his mercy, God provided an opportunity for Lot and his family to escape the impending judgement. God’s angels guided the family out of Sodom and gave unequivocal instructions on how to remain safe: run to the mountains and don’t look back. Any delays or failure to obey the instructions could jeopardise Lot, his wife and their children.
When Looking Back Can Cost You Everything
Unfortunately, Lot’s wife turned to look at Sodom. Scripture does not tell us what motivated her to disobey God’s instructions. We can only speculate. The consequences of her actions were swift and devastating. She turned into a pillar of salt. Disobeying God comes with severe consequences on the part of the sinner.
While Lot’s wife had left the city physically, she apparently still treasured it in her heart, judged from her disobedience. It is no wonder that Jesus told his disciples thousands of years later: “Remember Lot’s wife.” (Luke 17:32). Christ used her examples as He warned His followers to be ready for His second coming, a time that the wickedness of the world would be comparable to that of Sodom.
When Moving Forward Is Not Enough
We may not have a physical Sodom to flee from, but we often find ourselves facing the same issues that Mrs Lot encountered. Leaving a physical situation is not always the same as breaking our affection for it. We may stop a certain negative habit but still long for it. Before the public, we are no longer in the relationship God had warned us against, but our thoughts and emotions are still there.
Take God’s direction seriously and allow your choices, loyalties and attentions to be for Him only. If you have walked away from sin but still feel attracted to that past, ask God to fill your heart and resolve, by His grace, to break away from that which does not please Him. Keep moving and trust God to lead You to what is best for you.
Prayer
Almighty God, fill my heart and my life to the extent that sin loses its attraction. Give me strength to keep obeying You, especially when the allures of sin threaten to entangle me.
