An Inheritance You Never Earned

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, November 3, 2026
That having been justified by His grace, we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Titus 3:7 (NKJV)

In his letter to Titus, as a young church minister based in Crete, the apostle Paul reminded the believers that in the past they had walked in foolishness and disobedience and were controlled by the desires of the flesh. Thankfully, in His great love and kindness, God had saved them. Now, in Christ, they enjoyed a new life, and their eternal inheritance was assured.

The Grace that Makes Heirs

Today’s key text packages this good news into a wonderful promise. When God justifies sinners through His grace, he makes them heirs according to the hope of eternal life. One becomes an heir when they have a relationship with the benefactor, not because they have worked to earn the inheritance. In essence, forgiven sinners become heirs by dint of their relationship with Jesus, which comes by grace through faith.

Think about what this promise meant to the people who had just left a life of sin to follow Christ. They had made a break and were no longer defined or controlled by their past conduct. Jesus had declared them righteous, and now they were part of the household of God. Now they were children of God and heirs of the promise of eternal life. Wasn’t that the best news they could ever receive?

An Inheritance You Never Earned

We often value ourselves based on what we have achieved, what people say about us and the stories of our lives. This can make us feel either proud or unworthy. In contrast, Paul’s message to Titus reminds us to look at what God has done. Irrespective of where we come from and what defines us, we are all saved by His grace. We have eternal life, not because of any good thing we have done and notwithstanding our sinful pasts.

Do you carry memories of decisions that you regret? Perhaps you feel that your life has little to offer. Don’t despair. In Christ, your past does not have to determine your future. Grace takes care of everything and then gives you a place in the family of God. You receive an inheritance you never deserve because Jesus died the death you deserved. Walk with confidence, child of God.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for making me Your heir through grace. Help me live with confidence in Your promise and let my choices demonstrate that I belong to You.
