I will both lie down in peace and sleep for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Psalms 4:8 (NKJV)
Have you ever watched a baby sleeping after taking a bath and after suckling? It doesn’t matter whether the parents are in financial distress or the family is in disarray. The little human will snore away peacefully. Somehow, it knows there are other beings watching over it and protecting it from danger.
I Will Both Lie Down in Peace and Sleep
That’s the sense you receive when you read today’s key scripture. David is in trouble. In fact, he is hiding from his son Absalom somewhere in the wilderness. Although by now the psalmist has experienced trouble multiple times, he is genuinely afraid of what might happen. Thankfully, he has learned through previous cases of distress to trust in God.
In this evening prayer, David reflects on the betrayal and slander he is facing from his enemies vis-à-vis the goodness of the Lord to those who trust in Him. As he retires to bed, he expects to sleep soundly and peacefully because God’s presence is assured. His problems are not gone; the danger still lurks, but nothing will disturb his sleep tonight.
How to Experience Peace in the Face of Uncertainty
How often do we spend sleepless nights because we are worried about bills, illness, exams, interviews, and related matters? What change in our circumstances comes about because of our anxiety? What messages does our anxiety and insomnia communicate to those who know we are followers of Christ?
Today, if you are worried because of negative circumstances that threaten to drown you, memorise and recite David’s affirmation in the key text. Sleep is a gift from God that you can enjoy when you trust Him, irrespective of the risks you face. Trust God with your circumstances because “He who keeps you will not slumber” (Psalms 121:3).
Prayer
Almighty God, I will rest in You and enjoy the gift of sleep, not because my problems are fully solved or my circumstances have changed, but because I trust completely in Your protection and providence.
