I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Psalms 27:13 (NKJV)
David’s words in today’s guiding verse are not from a place of comfort but from a place of struggle. Throughout Psalm 27, he speaks about enemies, threats, and people who wanted to see him fall. Life was not unfolding the way he would have chosen. As he looked back, however, on that tough season, he saw something important. There were moments when he could easily have given up. Discouragement had come close enough to touch him. Fear had whispered its arguments. One conviction kept pulling him forward, though: he believed that he would see the goodness of the Lord.
What Do You Do When You’re Tired of Waiting?
Most of us can relate to that battle. Occasionally we start out with confidence and then we grow tired as time passes. We pray for a breakthrough, and the situation is no different. We ask God for direction, but the path ahead is no clearer than it was before. The burden may not crush us all at once. Instead, it gradually depletes us. A person can smile, go to work, speak with friends, and still carry a quiet exhaustion in the heart.
What strikes me about David’s testimony is that he does not point to a dramatic change in circumstances. He points to what he believed. He firmly believed that God’s goodness was still present in his life. Nor was it reserved only for eternity. Somehow, somewhere, he expected to see evidence of God’s faithful hand in the land of the living. That confidence did not remove every problem, but it gave him a reason to keep going when giving up seemed easier.
How to Keep Going When You Want to Give Up
We often think that what drains our strength is the size of the challenge in front of us. Sometimes the greater danger is losing sight of God’s goodness in the middle of that challenge. When hope begins to fade, everything feels heavier. Tomorrow seems less optimistic, and minor challenges seem more important. David reminds us that having faith does not mean acting as though nothing is wrong. It is choosing to trust God’s character even when life offers ‘reasons’ to doubt it.
Perhaps you have been carrying a burden for longer than you expected. The answers have not come, the burden has not lifted, and you wonder how much longer this season will last. If so, hold on to the truth that sustained David. The fact that God’s goodness is not immediately apparent does not mean that it has vanished. The story is not finished in the chapter you are currently in. Put your worries on Him, walk with Him, and have faith that you will see His goodness manifests itself in ways that are beyond your current comprehension.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me keep believing in Your goodness, even when my heart is tired and I want to give up. Raise my gaze above my situation, bolster my faith when hope seems far off, and remind me that even though I can’t yet see the proof, You are still at work.
