For each one shall bear his own load.
Galatians 6:5 (NKJV)
Brian was an active volunteer in his community. During one event, he kept accepting additional tasks from others. He intended to make the event successful, but he ended up frustrated and exhausted. Like Brian, we often become overwhelmed because we have accepted responsibilities God never assigned to us, our benevolent intentions notwithstanding.
The Burden You Were Never Given
In Galatians 6, Paul presents a practical picture of Christian responsibility. Earlier in the chapter, he tells believers to restore someone caught in sin and to bear one another’s burdens. Then verse 5 speaks about each person carrying their own load. The two instructions fit together within the passage. Some burdens become too heavy for a person to carry alone. However, each believer also has personal responsibilities that they cannot pass on to someone else. This is a call to examine our lives and faithfully carry what God has entrusted to us.
The word translated “load” refers to something a person is responsible for carrying. The context points toward personal accountability. Just before this statement, the apostle tells believers to examine themselves rather than measuring themselves against other people. Comparison can distract us from our calling. God calls us to take ownership of our choices, commitments, conduct, relationships, and service.
Is This Really Your Burden?
Brian eventually learned a valuable lesson. Helping people was part of his responsibility, but carrying everyone’s unfinished work was outside it. We can encourage someone who is struggling. We can pray for a person who has fallen. We can offer practical help when someone is struggling under a burden that has become too heavy to carry alone. Nevertheless, each of us still has choices to make and responsibilities to fulfil.
What responsibility have you been avoiding? What commitment needs your attention? Is there something you have taken responsibility for that really belongs to someone else? Today’s key text is an invitation to become faithful stewards of what has been placed in our hands. You do not need to carry everything. You need to carry your load faithfully. Start with one responsibility today, and ask God for the wisdom and strength to handle it well.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I continue serving other people on your behalf, remind me that I have personal responsibilities to carry. Teach me to carry my burdens while avoiding those that you never meant me to bear.
