Learning to Trust God with Your Next Step

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, October 20, 2026
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way.
Psalm 37:23 (NKJV)

A young man leaves home early each morning to seek employment. Some days, he finds temporary employment and earns something for his efforts. Other days he comes home with nothing. He has plans for the future and is always on the lookout for opportunities. One morning he receives a call from a former employer with an unexpected offer. He’s happy about the news and then starts to contemplate how he could be the best worker ever.

Who Is Directing Your Daily Steps?

Psalm 37 speaks to people who wonder why those who do wrong seem to get ahead while those who try to live right struggle. David knew that seeing such injustice could discourage people and weaken their trust in God. He urges his readers to keep trusting the Lord and to do what is right. In verse 23, he delves into how God guides the lives of those who walk with Him.

When David says the Lord orders a virtuous person’s steps, he is talking about the direction that person’s life takes. God takes an interest in our choices, our plans, and the paths we follow each day. He knows where we are going, even when we can only see the next step. The psalmist also tells us that God delights in the way of those who seek to follow Him. Our daily walk matters to Him.

Learning to Trust God with Your Next Step

Seeking employment can be discouraging when days turn into weeks without a promising opportunity. We may start to question whether our efforts will ever yield results. The young man in our story continues to search, and finally an old employer calls him. We are familiar with the sensation of waiting for things to align. As we go about our daily responsibilities, we can continue to make wise choices and ask God to guide our steps.

Think about the decisions you have to make today. Maybe you are seeking employment, running a business, or trying to support your family. Take your concerns to God and ask Him to guide you. Then do what you can with the opportunities before you. While you may not know where each step will lead you, choose to follow God and allow Him to lead you in the right direction, step-by-step.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, please order my steps and lead me where You want me to go. With Your guidance, I know I will always be on the right path.
