No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
2 Timothy 2:4 (NKJV)
A soldier crouched behind a barrier. Chaos around him. Smoke billowing in the air. Radios blaring with shouts. Danger was everywhere. He kept looking at his phone and not at the battlefield. Messages, notifications, and distractions were all distracting him as the battle raged around him. Then, in one thoughtless moment, enemy fire hit him before he even knew the threat was close.
Wounded by Distraction
Paul used the picture of a soldier to describe the Christian life. Christians are soldiers in the army of Christ and are called to serve Him with focus and discipline. A soldier in the middle of a battle must avoid distractions, for the consequences can be dire. Christians too must be careful that the cares of everyday life do not slowly draw their hearts away from God.
This doesn’t mean we should stop working, taking care of our families, or doing the normal things of life. The danger is when these things begin to control our thoughts more than Christ. We often spend so much time chasing entertainment, worrying about problems, or scrolling endlessly through our phones that prayer, scripture, and worship slowly become less important in our daily lives.
The Battle for Your Attention
Paul reminded Timothy that a true soldier seeks to please the one who enlisted him. Christians are not living aimlessly. We have been called by Christ Himself. Sometimes spiritual growth requires discipline. We may need to step away from habits, pursuits, or distractions that weaken our attention to God and leave our hearts spiritually worn and unprepared.
The world is always vying for our attention, but God still calls us to be spiritually alert. A distracted soldier is likely to endanger his life and that of his colleagues. In the same way, we grow weak when we don’t guard our hearts carefully. The Lord is willing to help us to live with the focus, discipline, and devotion that honour Him every day.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me be a disciplined soldier who is alert and faithful in serving You each day.
