Daily Devotional – Wednesday, August 2, 2026
Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another. And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him. For those who fear the Lord and who meditate on His name.
Malachi 3:16 (NKJV)
After church, two friends might stop and talk for a few minutes before going home. They could be sharing something that happened during the week or talking about what they learned from the Bible. After a while, they say goodbye, and each goes home. No audience heard what they said, and nobody wrote it down. Before long, the moment may be forgotten. Yet Malachi tells us about people whose conversations mattered to God because they feared Him and thought about His name.
What God Heard That Day
Malachi spoke to people who had become discouraged about serving God. Some looked at proud and wicked people who appeared to prosper and began asking whether there was any benefit in fearing the Lord. Not everyone, though, had adopted that attitude. There were people who still feared God and spoke to one another about Him. While some people complained about serving God, others continued to think about Him and talk about Him with each other. The Lord was listening to that conversation. He saw that these people had not turned away from Him.
The Book of Remembrance showed that God had not forgotten those who feared Him. They were living among people who had become cynical about serving God, but they had not joined them. Their words reflected what was in their hearts. They continued to reflect on God and speak with one another about Him. Malachi does not tell us that they were doing remarkable things that attracted attention. Instead, he portrays ordinary people who continued to fear God at a time when others were asking whether serving Him was worth the effort.
The Conversation God Never Missed
We may sometimes wonder whether the ordinary ways we live out our faith really matter. You may encourage someone who is discouraged and never know what happened afterward. You may talk about God with your children, pray with your family, or do what is right when no one else knows. Most of these things will never attract attention. People may forget them quickly. Malachi’s words, however, remind us that God knows those who fear Him. He knows what is happening in the hearts of those who continue to honour Him.
Make your relationship with God a priority in your daily life. Speak about Him with your family. Encourage another Christian when they are struggling. Keep doing what you know is right, even when people around you question whether it is worth it. Do not allow the attitudes of others to weaken your own commitment to God. You may never receive recognition for many things you do, and you do not need to look for it. Continue to fear the Lord and keep His name in your thoughts. That is what those people in Malachi’s day chose to do.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to remain faithful to You when others around me lose heart. Let my words and thoughts show that I fear You and that Your name matters to me each day.
