The Danger of Coming Down

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, June 10, 2026
I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?
Nehemiah 6:3 (NKJV)

The wall around Jerusalem was being rebuilt. Stone by stone, Nehemiah and the people were building again what had been broken for years. Their progress, however, attracted unwanted attention. Israel’s enemies did not like what they were seeing. When threats failed to stop the work, they tried a different approach. They invited Nehemiah to a meeting in the plain of Ono. It sounded innocent enough, but Nehemiah saw the trap at once. Leaving the wall would mean neglecting the work God had called him to do.

What Is Waiting in the Valley?

What stands out is the seemingly ordinary nature of the distraction. The invitation was not to do anything sinful. It was simply an invitation to step away. That is often how distractions work. They rarely announce themselves as dangers. They come dressed as opportunities, requests, conversations, and activities that seem perfectly reasonable. By themselves, they may not be wrong. What should concern us, though, is the ability of seemingly good or innocent issues to distract us from significant matters.

Unlike most people who find it difficult to grasp this matter, Nehemiah was alert. Not every request deserves a yes. Not every open door is God’s door. Because he knew what God had called him to do, he was able to measure everything else against that assignment. His answer was firm but simple: “I am doing a wonderful work, so I cannot come down.”

The Danger of Coming Down

There is a lesson here for all of us. Life is full of voices competing for our attention. Some days it feels as though everyone wants a piece of our time, energy, and focus. If we are not careful, we can become busy without being fruitful. We become so busy responding to distractions that we forget the responsibilities God actually gave us.

Nehemiah’s words challenge us to contemplate what wall we are building today. Perhaps it is your family, your ministry, your walk with God, or some other responsibility. He has placed it in your hands. Whatever it is, guard it carefully. Not every invitation deserves your attention. Sometimes faithfulness means staying where God has placed you and refusing to come down.

Prayer
Dear Father, help us to know the distractions and have the courage to be faithful to the task You have given us to do.
