Daily Devotional – Friday, July 17, 2026
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.
1 John 5:4 (NKJV)
Grace got her first job and soon realised that taking shortcuts was part of the office culture. Her supervisor told her to alter reports and not tell clients some facts because “everybody does it.” She knew that saying no could make her working life hell, but somewhere deep inside her she refused to compromise. It was more than a strong personality. Her relationship with Christ had changed her, and that new life shaped the choice she made.
The Hidden Source of Spiritual Strength
John reminds us where that kind of courage comes from. He writes, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world.” He does not point to intelligence, discipline, or determination. He points to the new birth. The “world” John refers to is the value system that is in opposition to God and is always pressing us to conform, chase after selfish ambitions, and disregard His ways. We do not triumph because we are naturally stronger than those pressures. We win because God has given us a new life in Jesus Christ.
John continues, “And this is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Faith is not just positive thinking or merely hoping that all will go well. It’s the choice to trust in Christ instead of ourselves. As we depend on Him, His life becomes evident in the way we respond to temptation, disappointment, and difficult decisions. We are trying to achieve a victory within our reach. We are learning to live in the victory that Christ has already won for us.
The Difference Between Willpower and God’s Power
This truth should encourage every believer who feels inadequate. You may question whether you are strong enough to resist temptation, to be honest when compromise seems easier, or to be faithful when following Christ costs you something. The answer is not to try harder. God never intended for you to face life’s challenges alone. The life He has placed within you is more powerful than your weakness, and as you continue to trust Christ, He empowers you to stand.
Today, you may find yourself in a moment like Grace, facing a choice between what is easy and what is right. When that moment comes, do not measure your spiritual life by the strength of your resolve. Instead, remember that in your new life in Christ, God has already given you all you need. Make the choice to trust Him one step at a time, and you will find that victory over the world does not come from your own strength. It is the product of God’s life working in you, giving you a faith that is steady and true.
Prayer
Father in Father, thank You for the new life I have in Jesus Christ. Help me to trust You and not my own strength when I am under pressure from this world. Let others see the life of Christ in my choices today, so they may witness His victory at work in me.
