Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
James 3:18 (NKJV)
As Emma entered the church for choir rehearsal, she found two choir members quarrelling over an error in the service the previous week. Instead of taking sides, she asked them politely to continue the conversation in another room. She listened patiently, encouraged them both to look at the other’s side and told them serving Christ was more important than winning an argument. They made up before rehearsal began. Over the coming weeks, they worked together with a new trust, encouraged younger choir members and helped create a warm united atmosphere. A moment of quiet peacemaking was the beginning of something much bigger than anyone imagined.
What Happens When You Choose Peace
That quiet change helps us understand James’ closing words in this chapter. After describing the difference between earthly wisdom and the wisdom that comes from above, James says that “the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” He is not merely saying that Christians should settle disagreements whenever they arise. He is demonstrating that peace is the ground in which righteousness takes root. When believers, in humility, gentleness and mercy, pursue peace, they make room for God to work in ways that cannot happen when bitterness and selfish ambition fester.
That explains why James speaks about sowing rather than solving. A farmer does not expect a harvest the moment seed touches the ground. He plants because he believes something will grow in time. Peacemakers do much the same. They choose patient words when harsh ones would be easier. They listen before making accusations. They forgive and don’t nurse old wounds. They may look small, even unnoticed, but they are the things God uses to produce lasting fruit. Righteousness often grows quietly, long before anyone recognises that a harvest has begun.
The Harvest Only Peacemakers Can Grow
Looking back, Emma did more than rescue one choir rehearsal. There could have been a festering resentment for months, quietly affecting other people without touching the argument. Her decision to seek peace, though, changed those relationships. The two singers rebuilt each other’s trust, the younger members saw reconciliation instead of division, and the choir grew stronger because someone cared enough to plant the right seed. James reminds us that this is how God’s wisdom works. Peace is never an end in itself. It becomes the place where righteous lives continue to grow together.
Most of us will not be asked to resolve a public disagreement this week, but every day gives us opportunities to sow peace. We choose it when we answer gently, refuse to spread hurtful words, seek understanding before judging, and take the first step toward reconciliation when relationships become strained. Those moments may seem mundane, but God loves to take ordinary acts of obedience and produce extraordinary fruit. Sow peace where the Lord has placed you, then leave the harvest to His faithful care.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for showing me that righteousness grows when peace is diligently planted. Make me a peacemaker in my home, in my church, and in any relationship You bring to me. Let my words and actions reflect the wisdom that is from You.
