…that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:12 (NKJV)
The audience who first received Hebrews faced a danger that rarely announces itself. Spiritual sluggishness was beginning to manifest itself and the author knew where that road could lead. Rather than ignore the problem, he interrupted it with a warm but urgent appeal. Before spiritual drift took a deeper hold, he called them to lift their eyes and learn from people whose lives proved that God’s promises are worth waiting for. His words invited weary believers to consider a different way of responding to discouragement, one that looked beyond present struggles to the faithfulness of God.
Don’t Let Spiritual Weariness Win
He did not direct them to a new experience or a different message. Instead He directed them to faithful men and women who had already walked the path before them. Their lives testified that God’s promises are inherited through faith and patience, not by those who lose heart when the journey becomes long. The command to imitate them prepared the readers for the example that immediately followed, because one man above all others illustrated what patient faith looks like. Rather than searching for something they had never heard before, they needed to remember what faithful endurance had always looked like in the lives of God’s people.
That man was Abraham. God promised to bless him and make him the father of many nations, yet the fulfilment did not come quickly. Years passed before Abraham held the promised son in his arms. But he believed still in the God that spoke. His confidence rested, not on changing circumstances, but on God’s unchanging promise. Abraham’s life reminded those weary believers that faith does not measure God’s faithfulness by the speed of His answers. The promise did not become more certain with the passing years because it rested on the character of the One who made it from the very beginning.
The Hidden Danger of a Sluggish Faith
That reminder still speaks with quiet power. We too can become weary when prayers appear to go unanswered, obedience costly, or God’s promises distant. Hebrews encourages us to look at these seasons differently. Instead, we are called to remember how God dealt with His people in the past rather than letting discouragement shape our faith. Their lives remind us that waiting has never called God’s faithfulness into question. It has often been the very path through which He fulfilled His promises. The same call to patient endurance still encourages believers to keep trusting God’s Word when they cannot yet see the outcome He has promised.
Perhaps you have waited longer than you expected for God to work. Keep trusting His Word even when you cannot yet see the outcome. Refuse to let spiritual sluggishness replace patient faith. The God who kept His promise to Abraham has not changed, and neither has His faithfulness. Be like those who believed in him until the end, let their faith strengthen yours as you continue to walk with Christ. God gives His promises and always fulfills them. Faith may have to wait. Let that confidence determine the way you wait, the way you obey, and the way you keep following Him each day.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me not to get slack spiritually while I wait upon You. Build my faith I will hold onto Your promises, I know that You are always faithful to Your word.
