Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
John 16:24 (NKJV)
If you have followed Christ for a while, there is probably one prayer you still remember clearly. It may have been a prayer you whispered through tears, one you repeated every day, or one you almost stopped praying because nothing seemed to be changing. Then, in God’s own time, the answer came. Looking back, what strengthened your faith was not simply getting what you had asked for. It was realising that God had never stopped listening to you. He had heard every prayer, even when you wondered if anyone was there.
Why Jesus Connected Prayer With Joy
That is the setting behind Jesus’ words in today’s verse. His disciples were about to lose the comfort of having Him beside them. Within hours, everything they had depended on would seem to be lost. Before that moment arrived, Jesus made them a promise that they would only fully grasp later. They would be able to come to the Father in His name, and He would hear them. Then Jesus added something that one can miss easily. He said the purpose of answered prayer was that their joy might be full.
Most of us get excited about the answer, and there is nothing wrong with that. We thank God when He provides a job, restores our health, opens a door, or rescues us from a difficult situation. Those answers matter because they show His kindness. Yet every answer carries another message that is even more precious. It reminds us that we are not alone in life. Jesus gives us a Father who welcomes us, listens to us, and cares about what weighs on our hearts.
The Joy Behind Every Answered Prayer
Perhaps that is the joy Jesus was talking about. The answer may solve today’s problem, but the relationship gives us confidence for every tomorrow. Once we know that our Father hears us, we learn to face life differently. We still bring Him our needs, but we do so with the quiet assurance that He knows what is best. We carry that confidence with us long after the excitement of receiving an answer has faded.
The next time God answers one of your prayers, pause for a moment before you move on to the next request. Let that answer remind you of something bigger than the blessing itself. Your greatest joy is not found in what God places in your hands. It is found in knowing that, because of Jesus Christ, you have a Father who will never turn you away when you come to Him.
Prayer
Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your presence through Jesus. Fill my heart with the joy of knowing that You hear me and that You always care for me.
