The Kind of Growth That Disrupts Comfort

Daily Devotional – Saturday, May 23, 2026
Where no oxen are, the trough is clean, but much increase comes by the strength of an ox.
Proverbs 14:4 (NKJV)

To many people, a good office is one with quiet desks, clean floors, and no interruptions. Did you know, however, that a busy office can tell a different but positive story? Phones are ringing, papers are strewn over the desks, and exhausted workers are rushing to meet important needs before the day is over. It may seem stressful and messy, but it also shows that a product is being manufactured. Solomon used a similar illustration to teach a profound truth about life and growth.

Some Burdens Carry Hidden Blessings

In ancient times, the ox was the most important animal for farming. They pulled the plough and ferried crops from the fields. Keeping oxen also meant dirty stalls, extra work, and daily responsibility. A perfectly clean stable sounded appealing, but without oxen there would be no harvest to enjoy later. Solomon was not praising disorder or confusion. He reminded people that fruitful living often entails unavoidable inconvenience, effort, and responsibilities.

Many of us want growth while quietly hoping life stays comfortable and manageable. We want strong families, meaningful work, healthy relationships, and fruitful ministry, yet all of those things require patience and sacrifice. A loving home becomes noisy. Caring for people can become tiring. Building something worthwhile often interrupts routines and stretches our energy in ways we did not expect when we began.

The Kind of Growth That Disrupts Comfort

Today’s key text reminds us that not every negative situation or experience indicates that things will get worse. What may feel like pressure, responsibility, and interruption might very well be signs of deep growth just below the surface. God uses challenging seasons to grow us in patience, wisdom, compassion, and faithfulness. Comfortable seasons may feel good, but hard responsibilities tend to lead to deeper maturity and stronger character over time.

You may feel tired today of carrying around responsibilities that seem endless and chaotic. But some burdens are evidence that meaningful work is taking place in your life. God can use demanding seasons to produce lasting fruit, which may only become visible much later.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to be faithful in hard seasons and teach me to value the growth You are creating in my life.
