The Prayer God Didn’t Answer

Daily Devotional – Saturday, July 11, 2026
For the LORD God is a sun and shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
Psalms 84:11 (NKJV)

James spent months preparing for what he thought would be the best job he could ever have. He prayed about it, attended the interview full of hope, and walked away convinced it had gone well. Then the rejection email arrived. He was crushed. He could not understand why God had allowed the opportunity to slip away. Two years later, that same company collapsed in a financial scandal. By then, James had settled into another job that proved to be more secure and far more rewarding. Looking back, he realised that God had not closed a good door. He had closed the wrong one.

When God Says No

Most of us know what that feels like. We have prayed with confidence because we were sure we knew what was best. Then the answer came back differently from what we expected, or it did not come at all. We wonder whether God is holding something back. The eighty-fourth psalm gives us a very different view. God is not looking for reasons to say no. He loves to bless His children. He also knows when the very thing we are asking for would eventually hurt us.

The rest of the psalm helps us understand why. The writer is not chasing success, comfort, or an easier life. More than anything else, he wants to be close to God. That changes the way he sees everything. When being with God becomes our greatest desire, we stop measuring His goodness only by the prayers He answers. We begin to trust Him with the answers we do not understand. Sometimes God’s protection looks exactly like disappointment.

The Prayer God Didn’t Answer

James was not wrong to feel disappointed. He simply did not know the rest of the story. Neither do we. We stand before a closed door while God can already see what lies ahead. We grieve over what we think we have lost, while He is quietly leading us toward something better. We see one moment. God sees the whole journey. That is why we can trust Him, even when His answer does not make sense today.

Perhaps you are living through one of those moments right now. A door has closed. A plan has fallen apart. A prayer remains unanswered. Don’t let today’s disappointment convince you that God is no longer good. Just keep walking with Him. Trust His heart when you don’t understand His reasons. One day, you may look back on this season the way that man looked back on his rejection letter. You may discover that God’s greatest kindness was not the prayer He answered. It was the one He lovingly refused.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to give what is truly best for my life. When I cannot understand Your answers, help me to trust You and not my own understanding. Help me trust you enough to keep following you, knowing that your love is behind every yes, every no, and every wait.
