But whoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother in need and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
1 John 3:17 (NKJV)
The pastor shared a prayer request before the service ended. A young family in the church had fallen on hard times after the father unexpectedly lost his job. Their savings were gone, and they had gone several days with very little food. One church member listened carefully because he knew the family well. On his way home, he slowed down as he approached a supermarket. He could easily buy enough groceries to help them through the week. Then the excuses quietly surfaced. “The whole church knows about their situation. Someone has probably helped already.” He drove past the supermarket and continued home.
When Love Refuses to Walk Past
Today’s key text addresses moments like that. John is describing someone who can help. He is talking about a believer who has the means, sees another believer in need, and chooses to do nothing. The question is not how much money the person has. Whether the need is real is irrelevant. John takes both of those facts for granted. His concern is what happens inside the heart when compassion begins to stir, yet we deliberately push it aside until doing nothing feels perfectly reasonable.
That is why this verse is so thought-provoking. It reminds us that love is more than kind words, warm feelings, or sincere prayers. It takes shape in ordinary decisions that no one else may ever notice. Sometimes love looks like sharing a meal, paying for groceries, visiting someone who is struggling, or quietly meeting a need without expecting recognition. We may never be asked to die for another believer, but we are often invited to put someone else’s needs before our own. Those quiet choices reveal whether Christ’s love is truly shaping our lives.
The Silent Sin of Looking Away
John is not saying that helping others earns us salvation. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. He is saying that saving faith changes the heart. A believer whose life has been touched by God’s love cannot become comfortable ignoring the needs of fellow believers. We cannot meet every need, and we are not expected to solve every problem. Yet when God places both the need and the ability to help before us, love looks for a reason to respond instead of a reason to walk away.
Perhaps God will place someone who needs encouragement, practical help, or simple kindness in your path today. When that moment comes, notice what is happening in your heart. Don’t let excuses silence the compassion God has stirred in you. An open heart won’t always do something spectacular, but it won’t sit idly by when it has the opportunity to show the love of Christ to a brother or sister in need.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, fill my heart with love, love that gladly responds to the needs of my brothers and sisters, love that mirrors the love You have shown me.
