…having a form of godliness but denying its power.
2 Timothy 3:5 (NKJV)
The year 2026 appears to have revived the unending debate on which religion is right and which is wrong. The unholy marriage of religion and politics is tearing apart entire societies that previously coexisted peacefully. Social media is awash with ugly exchanges between people who profess one faith or the other. Ironically, this contest is taking place at a time when wickedness, injustice, and inequality are highly prevalent.
The Religion That Changes Nothing
For Christians in particular, one wonders how nations and societies that profess to follow Jesus continue to overtly or covertly uphold practices and values that contradict their profession. One cannot help but recall Paul’s prophecy of the end times in which he describes people who have a form of godliness but deny its power. The best way to describe this situation is as a spiritual oxymoron.
To have a form of godliness is to appear pious outwardly. For example, we can be regular churchgoers who participate faithfully in church rituals. Our prayer lives and language identify us as Christians. We are familiar with the Bible, and we can even quote verses and explain scripture. Perhaps we carry religious paraphernalia, display religious symbols, or identify our belongings with the denomination we follow.
The Uncomfortable Truth About Religion
Conversely, those who know us well can see through our facade. The godliness we profess has not transformed our characters. We are known for sowing hatred instead of love. Pride, dishonesty, pleasure-seeking, bitterness, jealousy, and open rebellion against God become our hallmarks. We have not allowed the Holy Spirit to transform our thoughts, attitudes, words, and conduct.
Today, remember that participating in religious activities does not make you a Christian. God is not satisfied with a mere profession of religion. He wants to transform your life. Allow His Holy Spirit to continue the work of restoring the divine character in you day by day. Let your profession match your character.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, come and dwell in me. Transform my life so that I may not merely have a form of godliness but also experience and demonstrate its transforming power.
