What Does Godly Wisdom Look Like?

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, July 1, 2026
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
James 3:17 (NKJV)

After a severe drought, a farmer discovered that fallen branches had blocked the irrigation canal that supplied water to his land and to the neighbouring farm. The neighbour had treated him unfairly for years, and no one would have blamed him for clearing only the section that led to his own field. Instead, after spending time in prayer that morning, he removed the entire blockage, allowing water to reach both farms. He chose forgiveness over bitterness, peace over revenge, because he felt it was more important to honour God than to settle old scores.

The Marks of Godly Wisdom

James reminds us that wisdom from above is vastly different than the wisdom our world admires. We often associate wisdom with intelligence, experience or the ability to solve difficult problems. God certainly values knowledge, yet He looks beyond what we know to the kind of people we are becoming. The fruits of heavenly wisdom are purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, sincerity, and true concern for others. It has a character that reflects the heart of Christ.

So wisdom isn’t about how well we argue or how often we prove ourselves right. It becomes visible in the choices we make when our pride is wounded, when we have the opportunity to retaliate, or when forgiveness seems undeserved. Anyone can respond well when circumstances are easy. The wisdom from above most clearly shows itself when it leads us to walk in God’s path and not our own natural desires.

Today, take a moment to honestly examine the choices before you. Are you responding out of pride, self-interest, or the desire to win? Or do you exhibit the qualities James describes? The wisdom that comes from God does more than help us make good decisions. It changes our attitudes so that, even in difficult moments, our lives reflect the unmistakable likeness of Jesus.

Ask God not just for answers, but for His wisdom. As His Spirit shapes your heart, you will begin to develop godly character, and your speech will gradually reveal your divine connection in ways no amount of knowledge ever could. When wisdom wears the face of Jesus, the world knows it is wisdom from above.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give me wisdom from above, not only so that I would make wise choices but also so that I would become more like Christ. Fill my thoughts, attitudes and actions with Your purity, peace, mercy and sincerity so that my life may glorify You.
