What Does It Mean to Flourish?

Daily Devotional – Friday, October 23, 2026
The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree. He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
Psalm 92:12 (NKJV)

In biblical times, the palm tree was valued for its fruit, while the cedar of Lebanon was valued for its size and strength. Both trees had their positive points. The psalmist uses them to describe the righteous, drawing on things people could see in their surroundings. The selection of these trees raises an intriguing question: What does it mean to flourish? How do we see it in our lives?

Growing at Your Own Pace

The two trees are a reminder that growth isn’t always about doing something impressive or reaching a certain point. The palm tree and the cedar, each in its own way, both grow. A life lived with God has its own journey, just as the palm tree and the cedar have their unique growth paths. What matters is that we keep growing in faith and character rather than judging our progress by how quickly we achieve the things we want.

Perhaps you have watched someone you started with move ahead while you feel stuck in the same place. They may have a successful business, a better job, or opportunities that you have not yet received. It is all too natural to wonder whether you are doing something wrong. Such comparisons can make us overlook the progress we have made. Someone else’s success does not mean your growth has stopped.

What Does It Mean to Flourish?

Growth, of course, takes work. A tree grows not from admiration, but from the right conditions. And so do we. We must learn, we must correct our mistakes, we must strengthen our faith, and we must take advantage of the opportunities before us. Some changes take time, and you may not see them right away. What matters is that you are moving forward and becoming a better person.

Is there an area where you have stopped growing because you feel discouraged by someone else’s progress? Instead of measuring your life against theirs, identify one thing you can do to improve your own. Continue your journey with God and allow yourself the space to develop. You do not have to be where someone else is to make meaningful progress in your life.

Prayers
Almighty God, help me to grow in faith and character without competing against anyone else. Give me the wisdom to take my chances and the patience to get better every day.
