Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?
Job 2:10 (NKJV)
Job lost his children and his belongings. Now painful sores covered his body, and he sat among the ashes, scraping his wounds. His wife watched him suffer and urged him to curse God and die. She had lost so much herself, and seeing her husband in such a state must have been heartbreaking. Their lives had changed completely, and she could not see how things would improve.
When Life Stops Making Sense
Job’s response to his wife was simple: should they accept blessings from God and refuse adversity? He had enjoyed years of prosperity, but now he was facing a kind of suffering he had never known. He maintained his faith despite the challenges he faced. He knew God had been benevolent to him, and the pain he was experiencing did not erase that goodness.
It is easy to trust God when life is treating us well. Job’s experience raises a difficult question: what happens to our faith when we lose the good things we have enjoyed? He had no explanation for his suffering. He was oblivious to the cosmic conflict he had become a part of. Still, he refused to measure God’s goodness by what was happening to him at that moment.
What Happens When the Blessings Stop?
We face our own difficult seasons. A family member falls sick, a job comes to an end, or a plan we have worked hard on falls apart. We pray for things to change, yet the situation remains the same. It is difficult to understand why God allows these things. We need a faith that can hold on like Job’s when life hurts and the answers we want are not coming.
Perhaps you are in the midst of a situation that has caused you to become discouraged or puzzled. You may have wondered why God has allowed it to happen, especially after you have prayed and trusted Him. You can take those questions to Him. You can grieve what you have lost and still hold on to your faith. Ask God to help you through this season, even if you cannot yet see a way forward.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me trust. You when life takes a painful turn. Give me the strength to hold on to you when I don’t know what’s happening.
