Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”

Hagar’s story didn’t start in the wilderness. She was a servant of Abram and Sarai. Sarai, tired of waiting for the child of promise from God, gave Hagar to Abram, and Hagar conceived. The two women soon began to be at odds, and Sarai mistreated Hagar. Finally, Hagar ran away. Pregnant and alone, she walked into the wilderness, not knowing what was ahead. Yet the place she reached was not beyond God’s reach. The Lord found her by a spring and began speaking to her.
What If God Finds You There?
God did more than notice Hagar from a distance. He addressed her personally and asked where she had come from and where she was going. Those questions brought her face-to-face with her situation. She could explain where she had come from, but she had no answer about where she was going. God then spoke about her future and the child she carried. Hagar ran away from a difficult situation, but God met her in the middle of her confusion and showed her that her life and future were no secret to Him.
Hagar’s response gives today’s key text its profound depth. She understood that the God who met her was near and sympathetic to her pain. The God of Abram and Sarai had seen an Egyptian servant whom others could easily overlook. Her response also expressed wonder at having encountered God so personally. She had not found God by searching for Him. God had found her. Alone in the wilderness, Hagar discovered that she had not disappeared from God’s sight.
What Happens When You Run Out of Answers?
That truth reaches beyond Hagar’s circumstances. We can easily assume that God works most visibly through important people and in important places. But Genesis speaks of this close encounter with a frail servant who had fled an unhappy home. God saw her distress, knew her circumstances, and spoke into her future. Her wilderness did not make her invisible to Him. Instead, the place where she felt most alone became the place where she discovered something deeply personal about God’s character.
You may never stand beside a desert spring as Hagar did, but you may know what it feels like to wonder whether anyone understands what you are carrying. You may feel overlooked at home, at work, or even among people who know you well. Hagar’s story shows more than the fact that God knows everything. It reveals His personal attention. He sees us in our real circumstances and meets us where we are. Bring your honest situation to Him today. You do not need perfect words. The God who found Hagar knows exactly where to find you.
Prayer
Loving Father in heaven, thank You for seeing me and knowing every part of my journey. Help me to remember that I am never out of Your sight or care when I feel ignored or unsure. Meet me in the hard places and give me faith to trust You for the road ahead.
