When Comfort Becomes Dangerous

Daily Devotional – Monday, May 25, 2026
Arise and depart, for this is not your rest. Because it is defiled, it shall destroy. Yes, with utter destruction.
Micah 2:10 (NKJV)

Peter’s family had lived in one house for many years. As time went by, the walls began to develop deep cracks, and the roof would start leaking whenever there was heavy rain. Friends urged them to move before something terrible happened, but leaving felt inconveniencing. The house carried too many memories. One night during a storm, part of the roof collapsed while the family was still inside.

The Comfort That Slowly Destroys

That illustration helps us understand Micah’s warning. God had given Israel a prosperous land where His people were meant to live in obedience and justice. Instead, sin, greed, and cruelty spread throughout the nation, and the people had become so accustomed to their sinful ways that they no longer realised how spiritually dangerous their condition had become.

The same thing can happen in our lives. Occasionally we remain in sinful habits, unhealthy relationships, or environments that slowly pull us away from God because those things have become familiar. At first, the warning signs trouble the heart, but after a while, the conscience grows quieter, and wrong starts feeling normal.

When Comfort Becomes Dangerous

When God said, “Arise and depart,” He was not trying to make His people miserable. He was calling them away from something that would eventually destroy them. There are moments when God unsettles our comfort because He loves us too much to leave us where we are spiritually weakening and drifting further from Him.

This world will never offer the profound rest that your hearts genuinely require. True peace is found only in Christ. He calls you to leave every place of harmful comfort and walk closely with Him. What God calls you away from may be familiar, but what He calls you into is always so much better.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to recognise my dangerous comforts and give me the courage to follow you into true peace and safety.
