When Everyone Else Gives Up on You

Daily Devotional – Monday, October 12, 2026
When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take care of me.
Psalms 27:10 (NKJV)

When Barak decided to accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour, he knew his family would be uncomfortable with his choice. However, he never imagined that his parents would disown him and throw him out of their home. His father, a renowned leader in a different faith, could not stand the shame of losing his son to Jesus. Thankfully, there was One who could never reject Him – God.

The One Person Who Won’t Abandon You

In the twenty-seventh psalm, David talks about trusting God in the face of rejection, danger, opposition and the possibility of being abandoned by those closest to us. In verse 9, the psalmist pleads with God to forsake him even as the wicked lurk. It is a cry from the depths of his heart for God to support and secure him in times of danger, uncertainty and betrayal.

Scripture does not record that Jesse and his family ever abandoned David. The reference to his mother and father is hypothetical, illustrating how even those closest to us can desert us when we need them most. The highlight of this verse, then, is David’s declaration that he can trust in God’s care and faithfulness when all human support fails him.

When Everyone Else Gives Up on You

We live in a society where more often than not the mantra of ‘Everyone for himself and God for us all’ is prevalent. Friends, workmates, and even fellow believers may misunderstand us, abandon us, or become so consumed by their own struggles that they overlook ours. Even family members may be unavailable when we need their emotional or material support most.

When that happens, when you feel like Barak and David, remember that God is ready and willing to listen to you and offer the support and safety you crave. If you are going through personal challenges that only God and you understand, if you feel abandoned by those who ordinarily would stand by you, like David, declare your confidence in God’s care. You may feel alone, but you can still trust that God will take care of you.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, when those closest to me misunderstand and abandon me, remind me that I can always turn to You for support and care.
