When God Finally Makes Room

Daily Devotional – Thursday, June 4, 2026
And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth because he said, “For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
Genesis 26:22 (NKJV)

Isaac was living through a difficult season. A famine had driven him into Philistine territory, yet God blessed him there. His crops prospered, his livestock increased, and his household grew. Instead of celebrating with him, the people around him became jealous. His father had owned the wells, and when his servants dug new ones, local herdsmen repeatedly claimed them. Every fresh start seemed to come with a fresh argument.

Walking Away from the Quarrel

Most people would understand if Isaac had decided to fight. Water was essential for survival, and these disputes were not over something trivial. Yet Isaac chose a different path. He walked away from one quarrel, then another. That could not have been easy. Yet he kept pushing ahead instead of letting conflict eat him up.

At last, Isaac’s servants dug another well, and no one contested it. After all the tension and frustration, there was finally peace. Isaac named the place Rehoboth, saying, “The Lord has made room for us.” Notice where he placed the credit. He did not speak about his patience, wisdom, or determination. His eyes were on God, who had quietly been guiding him all along.

When God Finally Makes Room

Many of us know what it feels like to keep running into obstacles. A plan falls apart. An opportunity slips away. A relationship becomes strained. After a while, it is tempting to think that every door will remain closed. We become weary, not because of one disappointment, but because of many disappointments piled together over time.

Isaac’s story reminds us that God is still at work when the path feels crowded and difficult. The well called Rehoboth did not appear at the beginning of the story. It came after setbacks, delays, and disappointments. If you are in such a season today, do not lose heart. The Lord knows how to lead His children into a place where they can flourish in His care.

Prayer
Almighty God, help us to trust You in all disappointment and to wait patiently for the place You have prepared for us.
