When Life Leaves Its Marks

Daily Devotional – Monday, June 22, 2026
For I have become like a wineskin in smoke, yet I do not forget Your statutes.
Psalms 119:83 (NKJV)

A wineskin is a bag made of animal skin to carry wine or water. In the ancient Near East, these skins were often hung near the roof of a tent or dwelling. Because homes had no chimneys, smoke from the cooking fire would rise and collect overhead. Day after day, the wineskins would be suspended in that smoky environment. It was blackened with soot, shrivelled with heat, and brittle from long exposure. It lost much of its softness, flexibility, and appearance. Anyone looking at it would immediately know it had spent a long time in the smoke.

Faith That Survives the Smoke

When the psalmist says, “I have become like a wineskin in smoke,” he is not talking about a difficult day or a lousy week. He is talking about a season that has lasted longer than he thought it would. The surrounding verses reveal a man waiting for God to save him, looking for answers, wondering how much longer the pain will go on. Life hasn’t shattered him instantly. Instead, the strain has accumulated over time, leaving its mark on him much like the smoke left its mark on the wineskin.

Many of us understand that kind of weariness. Some burdens arrive unexpectedly, while others seem to settle in and become a permanent part of our lives. A nagging illness, a troubled relationship, financial pressure, or a prayer that has gone unanswered for years can slowly sap our strength. We move on, but we know we are not quite the same. The smoke of hardship has a way of changing us. It leaves us exhausted, discouraged, and sometimes wondering when relief will finally come.

When Life Leaves Its Marks

The most important word in this verse, however, is “yet.” The psalmist acknowledges his condition and does not pretend everything is fine. He admits the effects of the smoke. But he says, “Yet I do not forget Your statutes.” His conditions have changed, but his anchor remains the same. The smoke has darkened the wineskin, but it hasn’t emptied it. He still holds onto God’s Word even when life is heavy and uncertain.

Maybe that’s where we locate ourselves in this verse today. God never promised us an uncomplicated life without seasons of hardship, but He gives us something better. He gives us His presence and His promises. If you feel like a wineskin in the smoke, take comfort in knowing God sees every mark the trial has left on you. He knows how long you have waited and how much strength it has taken to keep trusting him. Keep holding on. The smoke isn’t your end, and God won’t abandon you now.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, you see my struggles and the weight of my burdens. When I am exhausted, help me cling to Your Word. Increase my faith, remind me you are near, and give me grace to trust you in every season.
