For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind, Who declares to man what his thought is, and makes the morning darkness, Who treads the high places of the earth—The LORD God of hosts is His name.
Amos 4:13 (NKJV)
Have you ever told someone you were fine when you really were not? Perhaps you did not want to explain yourself, or you simply were not ready to talk. We all keep things to ourselves sometimes. People may accept our answers and never suspect anything is wrong. Yet there is One who knows us completely, even when we choose not to share what is troubling us.
The God Who Sees Beyond the Surface
Israel had repeatedly ignored God’s warnings. Through His prophet, the Lord confronted their disobedience and their failure to return to Him despite the troubles they had faced. Amos 4 repeats this sad refrain: the people had still not returned to God. The chapter concludes by reminding them of the one who was holding them accountable. Their God was the Creator of the mountains, the wind, and the earth itself.
This description was more than a declaration of God’s creative power. God knew the Israelites’ thoughts. They could not keep doing wrong and think that going through the motions of worship would excuse their actions. The God they had ignored knew how they were living and would hold them accountable. They needed to listen to His warnings and turn back to Him.
When Nobody Sees the Real You
We can worry so much about how others see us that we ignore what is happening inside. We may attend church, pray, and speak kindly while holding grudges or excusing dishonest behaviour. Others may never find out, but that does not make it right. We need to be honest with God and let His Word show us where we need to change. Faith should shape how we live, not just how we appear.
Is there something you know you need to put right? Perhaps you owe someone an apology, or you keep making excuses for a habit you should leave behind. Stop postponing the matter. Tell God where you have gone wrong, and then take one practical step towards change. You do not have to pretend that everything is fine. Let your response show that you are willing to face the truth and change.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I may hide my thoughts and feelings from others but not from You. Search my heart, reveal what I need to change and give me the courage to take responsibility and change.
