When Nothing Seems to Move

Daily Devotional – Friday, August 21, 2026
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, ‘The LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.’ Therefore, he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.
2 Samuel 5:20 (NKJV)

When the Philistines heard that David had become king over Israel, they came looking for him. David knew that he faced a serious enemy, so he went to God before he went to battle. He asked whether he should attack them, and God permitted Him. God also promised to give him victory. David followed God’s instruction and defeated the Philistines. When the battle ended, David recognised that God had made a way through the opposition he faced.

Before David Went to Battle

David called the place where he triumphed over the enemy ‘Baal Perazim’. The name points to the idea of breaking through. David compared God’s action to water bursting through a barrier. When water finds a weak place, it can suddenly break through and rush forward. David saw God’s power at work in the same way. The Philistines had come against him, but God opened the way through them. David still had to fight, yet he knew that the victory came from God.

David had fought many battles before, but he still asked God for direction. His experience could help him in a fight, but it could not tell him what God wanted him to do. He needed to ask. God answered, and David obeyed. We, too, can act like David. We may have experience, knowledge, or a plan for dealing with a problem, yet we still need God’s wisdom. Before we act, we should take the situation to God. Ask Him what we should do, and be ready to follow His direction.

When Nothing Seems to Move

Some situations in life can feel like solid walls in front of us. A child may struggle with schoolwork. A parent may face a difficult problem at home. Someone may pray for an answer and wonder why nothing seems to change. When you face something like that, do not let the size of the problem make you forget God. Take it to Him. Ask for wisdom, strength, and direction. He may remove the obstacle, help you face it, or show you a way you had not seen. You do not need to know everything that lies ahead. You need to trust God with the next step.

Think about the situation that is troubling you today. Instead of rushing ahead with your own solution, pause and present it to God. Tell Him what you are facing and ask Him to show you what to do. Then follow the direction. He gives you, even when the next step feels difficult. Keep trusting Him when you cannot see the entire path. God may open a door you could not open yourself, give you strength to keep going, or change the situation in a way you did not expect. When the way opens, remember who made it possible. Give God the glory for the breakthrough.

Prayer
Almighty God, help me to seek Your direction before I act. Give me wisdom when I face difficult situations and courage to follow Your leading. When You open the way, help me remember that the breakthrough came from You.
