When Resentment Takes Root in Your Heart

Daily Devotional – Monday, August 17, 2026
“Let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbour; and do not love a false oath. For all these are things that I hate,” says the LORD.
Zechariah 8:17 (NKJV)

Have you ever left an argument but kept having the same argument in your head? The conversation ended hours ago, yet you replay what the other person said. You think of the response you wish you had given and feel the anger rising all over again. Nothing is happening outwardly, but something is happening inside. Each time you revisit the offence, you give it a little more room in your heart. Eventually, the incident may be over, but the resentment remains. That is how something we could have released begins to take root.

The Sin We Hide in Our Hearts

God’s instruction through Zechariah goes deeper than our outward behaviour. He tells His people not to think evil against their neighbours and not to love falsehood. Notice where He starts: the heart. Before resentment becomes an angry word, dishonesty becomes an action, or bitterness damages a relationship, it can live quietly inside us. We can look perfectly fine while carrying thoughts that God does not approve. That is what makes this verse so searching. God is not concerned only with what people see. He also cares about what we allow to develop in the hidden places of our hearts.

Perhaps you have experienced this yourself. Someone hurt you, and although you have moved on with your life, you still revisit what happened whenever their name comes up. You may even tell yourself that you have forgiven them, yet part of you still wants them to feel the pain they caused you. That is a dangerous place to live. The problem is not that the hurt happened. The problem is what we choose to do with it afterwards. When we keep feeding resentment, it begins to shape the way we see the person, speak about them, and eventually treat them. What takes root inside us rarely stays inside us forever.

When Resentment Takes Root in Your Heart

We cannot prevent every wrong thought from entering our minds. A hurtful memory may return. Anger may rise unexpectedly. The important question is what we do next. We can rehearse the offence or release it to God. We can keep feeding resentment or refuse to give it another meal. We can protect a lie because it is convenient or choose the truth because it is right. Sometimes obedience happens in a place nobody else can see. You choose not to repeat the story. You stop imagining revenge. You pray for the person who hurt you. You tell the truth even when a lie would be easier.

So today, ask God to show you what has been growing inside you. Perhaps there is an offence you keep replaying, resentment you have been protecting, or a dishonest thought you have quietly accepted. Do not excuse it simply because nobody else knows about it. Bring it into God’s presence and deal with it honestly. Release the resentment. Choose truth. Forgive where forgiveness is needed. You may not control every thought that enters your mind, but you can decide which thoughts you will keep feeding. What you allow to take root in your heart will eventually influence the person you become. Choose carefully what you let grow.

Prayer
Lord, search my heart and show me what I have been allowing to grow inside me. Help me to release resentment, to deny falsehood, to choose thoughts and attitudes that please You.
