Daily Devotional – Tuesday, July 21, 2026
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV)
Daniel and his teenage son were hiking along a mountain trail when they came to a fork in the trail. One trail was longer but well-marked. The other was wider, flatter, and much shorter. Daniel disregarded a worn warning sign and took the shortcut, believing it would save valuable time. Instead, the trail ended in thick brush. They lost their way on the way back and had to spend a cold and frightening night on the mountain as darkness fell until they were rescued the next morning.
The Road That Didn’t Look Dangerous
That is the kind of scenario we encounter in today’s key verse. The dangerous road did not look dangerous at all. It looked like the better option. That is often how spiritual deception works. The enemy rarely invites us to make decisions that appear obviously sinful. Instead, he makes the wrong choice look sensible, attractive, or even beneficial. We begin to trust our own reasoning because everything appears to be reasonable. Looks, nevertheless, are deceptive, and feelings are not always right. What seems harmless today may lead us far from the Lord tomorrow.
The Bible is filled with people who discovered these truths the hard way. Eve believed the forbidden fruit offered something good. King Saul convinced himself that partial obedience was sufficient enough. Judas put his own gain before loyalty to Christ. None of them expected the consequences that followed. They simply believed their judgement was sound. The problem was not that God’s instructions were unclear. The problem was that they trusted their own conclusions more than His Word. The wisest decision is not always the one that seems most sensible to us at the time.
When the Wrong Choice Feels Right
We can easily repeat the same mistake. Maybe someone wronged us. It feels right to hold a grudge. Compromise appears harmless because everyone else does it. A relationship may seem worth it, but it takes us away from God. As the father ignored the warning sign, so we too sometimes ignore God’s warnings when another way seems easier or more profitable. Looking back, many believers can trace painful seasons to one decision they believed could never go wrong. That is why God’s warnings are acts of love, not restrictions meant to spoil our joy.
Before making your next important decision, pause long enough to seek God’s direction. Ask yourself whether your choice agrees with Scripture, not merely whether it feels right. Pray before you proceed, and be willing to accept God’s answer even when it leads in a different direction. Daniel and his son eventually found safety because someone who knew the mountain came looking for them. We have a Guide who never loses His way. When we trust Him instead of ourselves, He leads us on a path that always ends in life.
Prayer
Father, thank You for seeing what I cannot see. Don’t let me lean on my own understanding when it is contrary to Your Word. Give me a heart that will follow You without faltering. Guide me each day along the path that gives life and honours You.
