When You Stumble Along the Way

Daily Devotional – Thursday, October 22, 2026
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the LORD upholds him with His hand.
Psalm 37:24 (NKJV)

Daniel was pleased to get a job with his old employer. He wanted to do well, to prove he deserved the opportunity. However, he made an expensive mistake in his first week when he misunderstood an instruction. He was conscience-stricken and afraid of losing his job. His supervisor spoke to him, explained what he had done wrong, and gave him another chance.

Finding the Strength to Rise After a Fall

In Psalms 37:23, David speaks about the Lord directing the steps of a virtuous person. In verse 24 he acknowledges something we all know from experience: even good people fall. We make mistakes, we become frustrated, and occasionally we suffer because we make poor choices. Times like these can make us feel discouraged and wonder how we will ever recover. David reminds us that a fall does not have to be the end of our journey.

David writes that when a good person falls, the Lord upholds him with His hand. I find comfort in that picture. God knows how easily we can become discouraged when things go wrong. He sees our struggles and our weaknesses. His hand urges us upward, to learn from our experiences and to keep going. When our strength fails, we can turn to Him and ask for help in regaining our footing.

When You Stumble Along the Way

Picture Daniel, who just made an expensive screw-up at work. He could have felt humiliated, but his supervisor offered him an opportunity to learn and grow. Occasionally we need to take corrective action, admit our mistakes, and change our ways. When we bring our failures to God, He gives us the courage to face them and the wisdom to know what to do next.

Have you made a mistake that you are still struggling to get past? Perhaps you regret a decision, feel ashamed of something you did, or fear what comes next. Take the matter to God today. Apologise, make amends, and learn from the experience, where appropriate. Give yourself a chance to mature. With God’s help, you can rise from this experience and continue walking with Him.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I stumble, remind me that You are the One Who sustains me. Help me admit my mistakes, rise up, and continue walking.
