Daily Devotional – Thursday, August 13, 2026
“Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,” says the LORD; “and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,” says the LORD, “and work; for I am with you,” says the LORD of hosts.
Haggai 2:4, NKJV
The history of the people of Judah had been a disastrous chapter. Jerusalem had fallen, the temple lay in ruins, and many of them had lived in exile in Babylon. When they finally returned, they began rebuilding what they had destroyed. Zerubbabel led them politically, Joshua served as high priest, and the people returned to the difficult work of restoring the temple. They had every reason to be grateful, yet rebuilding was not easy. They were starting again from ruins.
When What You Are Building Looks Smaller
Then something else began to trouble them. Some of the older people remembered Solomon’s temple and the glory associated with it. What they were now building seemed painfully small by comparison. Haggai asked them whether, in their eyes, the new temple looked like nothing compared with the former one. Their hands were working, but their hearts were struggling. They were not necessarily unwilling to work. They were discouraged because the present could not match the glory they remembered from the past. That is when God spoke to Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the entire community: “Be strong… and work; for I am with you.”
Notice what God did not tell them. He did not tell them to pretend the new temple looked magnificent. He did not ask them to forget what they had seen before. He simply told them to be strong and to keep on working. Their comparison with the past had begun to weaken their commitment to the present. Yet God wanted them to understand that the value of their work did not depend on whether it looked as impressive as what came before. His presence mattered more than appearances. They could continue because He was with them.
When Your Best Days Seem Behind You
We can make the same mistake. Occasionally we look at our lives, our families, our ministry, our careers, or something we are building and compare it with an earlier season. What we have now seems smaller. The progress feels slower. The opportunities are fewer. The results do not seem to match what we once experienced. Before long, comparison quietly turns into discouragement, and discouragement makes us question whether the work is worth continuing. Haggai reminds us not to despise small beginnings simply because they do not look like what we had before. God may be doing something through the present that we cannot yet see.
So, keep working on today’s assignment, even if it looks different from yesterday’s success. Keep showing up. Keep obeying. Keep building what God has put before you. You do not need to make your present look like your past for it to matter. The people rebuilding Jerusalem could not recreate what had been destroyed overnight, but God did not ask them to. He asked them to be strong and work because He was with them. That is enough reason to keep going when what you are building looks smaller than what you remember.
Prayer
Lord, when I become discouraged by comparison, help me value what You have placed before me and give me strength to keep working, because You are with me.
