Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.
Isaiah 59:1–2 (NKJV)
After several days of heavy rain, my water tank remained empty. I wondered why no water was getting into it. When my son climbed onto the roof to check, we discovered that mud and dead tree leaves had blocked the point where water flowed from the gutter into the tank. They had accumulated over time and formed a thick layer of humus. The rain was falling, but the water could not reach the tank.
What Is Getting Between You and God?
As we cleaned the gutters and the pipes, today’s key text came to mind. At some point, God’s people must have wondered why He seemed distant, and Isaiah wanted them to understand what was happening. He asserted that the LORD was still able to save and hear them. His power had not diminished, and He had not lost the ability to listen. Their sins had come between them and God, affecting their relationship with Him.
The Jews were committing many evils, including injustice, violence, and dishonesty. As a result, God’s blessings had stopped flowing. Yet, rather than look at their conduct, they could easily have shifted the blame to someone or something else. That happens to most of us when our relationship with God begins to suffer. We continue to focus on external factors while neglecting the attitudes and habits that have taken root in our lives.
When Your Spiritual Gutter Becomes Clogged
When your spiritual life begins to suffer, take time to examine yourself. Have you gradually stopped praying as you used to? Have you become careless about reading God’s Word? Is there a habit you know you need to abandon, or someone you need to forgive? These things can slowly clog our lives and impede God’s blessings from reaching us.
Perhaps you have been wondering why your relationship with God no longer feels as close as it once did. Could something negative you have allowed to remain in your life be affecting your fellowship with Him? Stop making excuses or pointing fingers at others. Ask God to show you the areas of your life that need unclogging. Be willing to admit where you have gone wrong, turn away from it, and put your relationship with Him back on the right path.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me recognise anything in my life that is clogging my relationship with You. Give me the courage to take the steps that will revitalise this relationship.
