Why Am I Still Stuck?

Daily Devotional – Thursday, June 18, 2026
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
John 5:8-9 (NKJV)

For thirty-eight years, the paralytic had lived in a limited world. He had been lying by the Pool of Bethesda day after day, watching others come and go, while he remained in the same condition. When Jesus came to him, the man immediately began to talk about the obstacles that had prevented him from receiving help. That response is easy to understand after so many years of disappointment. Yet Jesus did not focus on the man’s past failures or present limitations. He gave him a simple command. “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” In that moment, everything depended on what Jesus could do, not on what the man had been unable to do for nearly four decades.

The Miracle Started When He Got Up

Many of us know what it feels like to live with something that has lingered far longer than we expected. It may not be a physical condition. It could be a burden we have carried, a prayer we have repeated countless times, or a situation that seems determined to stay the same. After a while we become so used to the problem that it begins to influence our thinking. We stop expecting much to change because disappointment feels safer than hope.

What makes this story so powerful is the way God’s power and human response come together. The paralytic did not heal himself. The strength to stand did not come from determination, effort, or positive thinking. It came from Christ alone. At the same time, the man did not remain where he was. He responded to the word Jesus had spoken. The miracle was God’s work from beginning to end, yet faith was expressed through action. The man trusted Christ enough to do what seemed impossible.

Why Am I Still Stuck?

The same pattern often appears in our spiritual lives. We pray for God’s help, and rightly so, because without Him we can do nothing. Yet there are times when God calls us to take a step forward. We ask for guidance, and He points us in a direction. We ask for strength, and He gives us an opportunity to use it. Faith is more than agreeing that God can work. It means acting on what He says, even when we cannot see the full picture.

Perhaps there is an area of your life where God is asking you to trust Him today. The next step may feel uncertain, and you may be painfully aware of your own limitations. Remember that the paralytic did not rise because he suddenly found strength within himself. He rose because Christ gave him the strength to do what Christ had commanded. The same Lord who calls you forward is able to provide everything you need to obey Him. Your responsibility is not to supply the power. It is to trust the One who does.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank You that Your power is greater than every weakness and limitation in my life. Help me believe what You say, take the steps You place before me, and depend on Your strength instead of my own. Give me the faith to obey You even if I don’t see how it all works out.
