Why Chasing Peace Never Works

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.
Isaiah 32:17 (NKJV)

Margaret sat quietly outside an operating theatre while her husband underwent emergency surgery. Around her, relatives paced the corridor, checked their phones, and whispered their fears to one another. She was just as anxious because she did not know what the doctors would find. Yet those who knew her also knew she had walked with God for many years. With her Bible open on her lap, she read a few familiar promises, whispered a simple prayer, and settled back into her seat. The uncertainty remained, but so did her confidence that God was with her.

The Surprising Source of Lasting Peace

Where does that kind of peace come from? Many people assume it comes when life finally settles down. We tell ourselves we will be at peace once the bills are paid, the diagnosis is clear, or the future makes sense again. Isaiah gently challenges that way of thinking. He says, “The work of righteousness will be peace.” In other words, peace is not something we chase. It is something God produces in the life of a person who walks with Him.

That helps explain why people can face the same crisis and respond so differently. One person is overwhelmed by fear while another remains steady without denying the reality of the situation. The difference does not stem from natural temperament or positive thinking. It is the quiet work of God in a heart that has learned to trust Him. As that relationship deepens, peace gives way to quietness, and quietness becomes lasting assurance.

Why Chasing Peace Never Works

Isaiah is not promising that believers will escape hardship. Margaret still had to wait, and she still did not know what news the surgeon would bring. Her peace did not come from knowing the outcome before anyone else. It came from knowing the Lord who was already present in that hospital corridor. Even when answers were delayed, she knew He was faithful.

If you have been searching for peace, begin where Isaiah begins. Draw near to the Lord and let Him shape your life day by day. Like Margaret, you may still find yourself waiting for answers, but you do not have to wait without hope. The God who sustained her in that hospital corridor is able to steady your heart as well. When you walk with Him, He will give you the peace, the quietness, and the assurance that He alone can give.

Prayer
Teach me, Father, to walk close to You every day. Fill my heart with the peace, stillness and assurance which comes from trusting You completely.
