Why Is God Taking So Long?

Daily Devotional – Thursday, June 12, 2026
For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come; it will not tarry.
Habakkuk 2:3 (NKJV)

Habakkuk had a vision, and it troubled him. Violence, injustice, and wickedness seemed to be increasing in Judah, and he couldn’t comprehend why God was silent. He cried out to the Lord, asking why evil was allowed to continue unchecked. When God did answer, the prophet found himself with even more difficult questions, especially when he learned that Babylon would be used as an instrument of judgement. Habakkuk didn’t walk away in frustration or give up in despair. He went to the watchtower and waited for God to speak. There, the Lord assured him that His purposes would unfold at the appointed time.

What God Is Doing While You Wait

Most of us know what it feels like to wait longer than we expected. We pray about situations that matter deeply to us and hope for some sign that God is moving. We ask for wisdom, healing, provision, restoration, or direction. Yet days turn into weeks, and weeks sometimes turn into months or even years. The answer we long for does not seem to arrive. In those moments, disappointment may enter our hearts, and we may not even say it aloud, but we begin to wonder if God is hearing us. Waiting challenges our faith because we want answers that are instant and tangible.

God’s word to Habakkuk reminds us that delay is not neglect. The vision had its appointed time. God had not forgotten. His promise was misplaced, his plan was lost, or he lost control of events. Everything was moving toward the moment He had already determined. From Habakkuk’s perspective, the answer was taking too long to show up. From God’s perspective, though, the delay was the way things were supposed to be. What appeared to be inactivity was part of a grand design. God was on a timetable that Habakkuk could not see or understand.

Why Is God Taking So Long?

We often struggle because our timetable and God’s timetable rarely align. We want to see quick answers, but we are facing today’s problems. God sees the beginning, middle, and end all at once. While we are looking for immediate results He may be working on our character, our trust, or setting up circumstances in a way we cannot yet understand. His silence does not mean He is absent, and His delay does not mean He is indifferent. Occasionally the waiting season itself becomes part of His answer and part of His work in our lives.

If you are waiting for God to act in an area of your life, Habakkuk’s experience speaks directly to you. You may have been praying for a long time and are wondering when things will change. It is not wrong to feel the weight of the waiting. Habakkuk certainly did. However, this passage reminds us that God’s silence is not God’s absence. God is still working, even when we don’t see His hand. His promises will be fulfilled in His own time. Until then, keep bringing your concerns to Him, keep trusting in His character, and keep taking the next step of faith. The God who was faithful to Habakkuk has not changed.

Prayer
Father in heaven, help me to believe that You are still at work, even when answers are slow in coming. When I am exhausted, grant me the strength to persevere. In my doubt, remind me of Your faithfulness. Help me to keep walking with You as I wait.
