Why Small Beginnings Matter

Daily Devotional – Sunday, July 5, 2026
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.
Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)

Daniel had been putting aside a little money each month to start a welding business. After two years, his savings had grown far more slowly than he had expected because family emergencies kept draining what he had managed to save. Friends told him he was chasing a dream that would never happen. More than once, he almost gave up and used the money for something else. Instead, he stayed the course. A year later, he bought his first welding machine, and the small business he started eventually became his family’s main source of income. Had he walked away because the beginning looked too small, he would never have seen what God had in store.

Trusting God When Growth Is Slow

Many of us know exactly how that feels. We start reading the Bible consistently, praying more intentionally, repairing a strained relationship, or breaking a harmful habit. We begin full of hope, but when nothing appears to be changing, discouragement quietly sets in. We start wondering whether our efforts are making any difference. That is why this verse is so encouraging. God does not look at small beginnings the way we do. While we tend to focus on visible results, He delights in every faithful step we take.

That was the challenge facing the people rebuilding the temple. This new temple was nothing in comparison with the magnificent temple of Solomon. It was easy to become discouraged and to wonder if all the hard work was worth it. Yet God saw something they struggled to see. He rejoiced that His people had begun the work. What was important was not the size of the building but the obedience, for it was a sign of hearts willing to trust Him.

Why Small Beginnings Matter

Maybe you are in a season where your progress seems painfully slow. Maybe your family devotions seem ordinary, your prayers appear to go unanswered, or your efforts to raise godly children seem to produce little change. Do not mistake slow growth for no growth. Roots grow long before branches spread, and seeds develop beneath the soil long before anyone sees a harvest. God is often doing His deepest work where your eyes cannot yet see it.

Daniel eventually reached his goal because he refused to let slow progress convince him that the dream was over. God is calling us to demonstrate that same perseverance in our walk with Him. Stay faithful in the small things He has placed before you today. The Lord who delights in faithful beginnings has not forgotten your prayers, your obedience, and your quiet acts of service. Today’s small beginning in His perfect timing may be tomorrow’s testimony of His faithfulness.

Prayer
Thank You, Father, for caring about faithfulness even when my advancement seems small. Teach me to trust You one step at a time until Your purposes are accomplished in my life.
