Why Waiting for the Perfect Time Could Cost You Everything

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, July 15, 2026
Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NIV)

Naomi had a business idea she believed could make a real difference. Before launching it, she decided to improve a few things first. She enrolled in another course, rewrote parts of her business plan, refined her product, and kept telling herself she would start when everything was just right. Each delay sounded reasonable, so she kept pushing the launch a little further ahead. Then one day she watched someone else introduce a remarkably similar idea and succeed with it. Looking back, she realised the problem had never been a lack of preparation. She had spent so much time waiting for the perfect opportunity that she had missed the one she already had.

What the Bible Says About Waiting for the Right Time

Solomon understood that way of thinking long before anyone spoke about startups or business plans. He pointed to a farmer who kept watching the wind and studying the clouds instead of planting his seed. His point was not that planning is wrong or that wise people should ignore risks. Farmers had every reason to pay attention to the weather. The problem came when caution became an excuse for doing nothing. If a farmer waited until every condition looked perfect, the planting season would pass, the field would remain empty, and there would be nothing to harvest.

It is easier to fall into the same trap than we might think. We tell ourselves we will help the needy when we become richer. We will forgive when the hurt fades. We will start that ministry after we know the Bible better. We will have that difficult conversation when the time is right. We will donate more money when we are able to. Those reasons often sound sensible, which is why they are so convincing. Without realising it, we begin calling fear “wisdom” and hesitation “good planning”. Meanwhile, the opportunity to obey quietly slips away.

Why Waiting for the Perfect Time Could Cost You Everything

God rarely asks us to move when every question has been answered. More often, He asks us to trust Him with the questions that remain. Noah started building the ark before there was any sign of rain. Peter stepped out of the boat before he knew how the story would unfold. They acted because they trusted the One who had spoken. Faith has never been about having perfect conditions. It has always been about believing that God is faithful, even when the future is uncertain.

Is there something God has been prompting you to do that you keep putting off? Don’t let the search for the perfect moment become the reason you never take the first step. Remember Naomi. She did not lose her opportunity because she lacked ability. She lost it because she kept waiting for ideal conditions that never came. If God has already shown you what to do, trust Him enough to do it. The next step may seem uncertain, but obedience is always safer than indefinite hesitation.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have waited for the perfect time to obey You. Give me the wisdom to see the opportunities. You place before me the courage to take the next step of faith, trusting You with the outcome.
